Public Health on Target: Bridging the Gap Between Healthcare and the Firearm Industry

Because effective public health initiatives require the meaningful engagement of the population it intends to serve, AFFIRM at the Aspen Institute (AAI) attended the 2022 SHOT Show in Las Vegas last month to meet with firearm industry leaders, experts, manufacturers, retailers, and trainers to discuss health-based approaches to firearm injury prevention. The SHOT Show is the nation's largest professional event for the sport-shooting, hunting, and outdoor industry (estimated 47,000 attendees) and is hosted by The National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF), the national trade association for the firearms industry.


American Foundation for Firearm Injury Reduction in Medicine (AFFIRM) and the Aspen Institute Join Forces

Two nationally known non-partisan organizations with a commitment to reduce gun violence and prevent firearm injuries and deaths in the US have joined forces. On July 8, 2021, the board of directors of AFFIRM — the country’s leading organization dedicated to ending the nation’s firearm injury epidemic using a public health approach — voted to become an initiative of the Aspen Institute. In this new arrangement, AFFIRM at the Aspen Institute — as the enterprise will now be known — will be run under the auspices of the Institute’s Health, Medicine & Society (HMS) Program.

EmF and AFFIRM Announce Dr. Tamara O’Neal Memorial Research Award in Firearm Injury Research Mentorship Grant Request for Proposal

This grant aims to support underrepresented academic physicians and scientists who, like Dr. O’Neal, have chosen to dedicate their lives to supporting and enhancing underserved urban communities. The recipient of this award will receive $40,000 in grant funding to support a specific research project addressing the population that Dr. O’Neal cared deeply about serving.
