Sign the Petition for Firearm Injury Prevention Research

#StandAFFIRM Letter to Congress

Dear United States Senators and Representatives,

As a healthcare professional and concerned citizen, I see the human toll of firearm injury every day. I also know that it doesn’t have to be this way. Across history, Americans have come together to solve epidemics with research. Federally funded research has allowed us to dramatically reduce deaths from public health epidemics ranging from HIV, to lung cancer, to car crashes – all while respecting individual autonomy.

We, the undersigned, #StandAFFIRM in support of the importance of federally-funded research for creating non-partisan solutions to the American epidemic of firearm injury.

Now is the time for the federal government to make the investment into firearm injury  prevention. Recently the House Appropriations Committee approved a Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies appropriations bill that would provide $50 million in federal research dollars for this purpose in FY 2020, split evenly between the U.S Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH). These funds would help overcome more than 20 years of near-zero federal funding of the field. We urge you to support appropriations for federal funding of firearm injury research.

A vote for federal research dollars is a vote for science, knowledge, and non-partisan solutions. Thank you in advance for your support.
